Changes in digestive enzymes activities during the initial ontogeny of wolf cichlid, Parachromis dovii (Perciformes: Cichlidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Frías-Quintana,Carlos Alfonso; Álvarez-González,Carlos Alfonso; Guerrero-Zárate,Rocío; Valverde-Chavarría,Silvia; Ulloa-Rojas,Juan B..
ABSTRACT Wolf cichlid, Parachromis dovii, is a species with a high potential for aquaculture in Central America; however, the knowledge of the digestive physiology in larvae period is limited. For these reason, this study evaluated the changes on digestive enzymes (alkaline and acid proteases, trypsin, chymotrypsin, aminopeptidase, carboxypeptidase, lipases, amylases, and phosphatases) during early ontogeny by biochemical analysis. All digestive enzymes were detected at first feeding (6 days after hatching, DAH, 9.49 mm, 168 degree-days DD). Afterwards all enzymes reached two main peaks in activity at 14 or 22 DAH (15.10 mm, 364 DD and 20.83 mm, 550 DD, respectively). Later, there was a gradual decrease in activity for trypsin and acid and alkaline...

MATTOS,Douglas da Cruz; SCRENCI-RIBEIRO,Rafaela; CARDOSO,Leonardo Demier; JUNIOR,Manuel Vazquez Vidal.
ABSTRACT The blue discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is often sold for ornamental purposes. It is a neotropical cichlid from South America, which is native to the rivers of the Amazon basin of Brazil, Peru and Colombia. The purpose of this study was to characterize the reproductive behavior of S. aequifasciatus and identify features that can later be used by breeders to facilitate the handling and reproduction of this species in captivity. The experiment was divided into two stages: the first dealt with partner selection and couple formation to observe the behaviors of territoriality, pursuing, fleeing, biting, stay, protecting and cleaning of the substrate. The second stage documented mating behavior, nesting and parental care, to observe vibration,...

Hernández,David Roque; Olivera,Carlos; Santinón,Juan José; Ruiz Diaz,Federico José; Sánchez,Sebastián.
For successful fish larviculture thorough studies describing the development of fish in different morphological aspects are required, as they are crucial for larval survival and growth. The present study described in Prochilodus lineatus larvae the osteological development of the vertebral column and caudal skeleton 30 days after hatching (dah). Larvae were obtained by artificial induction of adults. The beginning of formation of the spine occurs between 10 to 12 dah (8.3 mm standard length, SL) simultaneously to the first neural and hemal processes and the pre-caudal vertebral bodies. The ossification of the vertebral column occurred in cranio-caudal direction and was completed at 28 dah (22.6 mm SL). The development of the caudal skeleton elements...

Hernández,David Roque; Santinón,Juan José; Sánchez,Sebastián; Domitrovic,Hugo Alberto.
The effects of the replacement of bread yeast by soybean meal in diets for Rhamdia quelen larvae on growth, survival, and intestinal morphology were analysed. Larvae were fed for 20 days with five diets: a control diet formulated with 57% of bread yeast, and other four diets in which soybean meal at concentrations of 14.25, 28.5, 42.75 and 57% was added to obtain 25, 50, 75 and 100% of bread yeast replacement. Growth and survival parameters were negatively affected by dietary soybean meal inclusion. Larvae fed control diet showed significantly higher mean weight, specific growth rate, final biomass, and survival rate than larvae from other treatments. Enterocyte height and fold width of the posterior intestine showed highest values in the control group,...

Effect of body size heterogeneity on the aggressive behavior of larvae of matrinxã, Brycon amazonicus (Characiformes, Bryconidae) Acta Amazonica
CARVALHO,Thaís Billalba; SOUZA,Ellen Cristina Monteiro de; PINHEIRO-DA-SILVA,Jaquelinne; VILLACORTA-CORREA,Marle Angélica.
ABSTRACT Brycon amazonicus is a native Amazonian fish that is important for aquaculture in South America. Larval mortality is high in this species in intensive breeding systems due to aggressiveness among larvae. The present study investigated experimentally the effects of body size heterogeneity on the aggressive behavior and survival of B. amazonicus during the early stages of larval development. Two treatments (larvae groups with homogeneous and heterogeneous body size) were evaluated throughout early larval stages tested at six time points: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 hours after hatching (HAH). Two experiments quantified, respectively, aggressive interactions and mortality rates among larvae at each time point. The frequency of aggressive interactions...

Effect of prey concentrations and feed training on production of Hoplias lacerdae juvenile Anais da ABC (AABC)
LUZ,RONALD K.; PORTELLA,MARIA CÉLIA.
The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of daily prey concentration during the first 15 days of active feeding of Hoplias lacerdae larvae, and the juvenile size on the feed training. In the first phase, the larvae received five Artemia nauplii concentrations (P). In the second phase, the juveniles from each treatment were trained to accept formulated diet. Superior growth was related to higher initial daily prey concentrations (900 and 1100 nauplii larvae-1). During feed training, the growth tendency was similar to that verified in the first phase. The lowest values of specific growth rate (SGR) were registered after the introduction of the semi-moist diet used in the feed training. However, the values of SGR recovered along the experiment and...

Oliveira,Isabela Bacalhau de; Lavander,Henrique David; Lima,Priscilla Celes Maciel de; Oliveira,Carlos Yure Barbosa de; Dantas,Danielli Matias de Macedo; Gálvez,Alfredo Olivera.
ABSTRACT: Anomalocardia brasiliana post-larvae were cultured for 28 days to evaluate the effect of stocking density on their growth and survival rate. Three stocking densities were tested 40, 80 and 160 post-larvae cm-2, in experimental units (2-L) with static cultivation system and total water renewal at each 48 hours. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and three repetitions each. Stocking density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length within 24 days, while only 18% of the post-larvae at density of 80 post-larvae cm-2 reached 1 mm length in the same time. The density of 40 post-larvae cm-2 had the highest specific growth rate, 4.98±0.08% day-1. The survival rates of post-larvae at lower densities were...

Luz,R.K.; Santos,J.C.E.; Pedreira,M.M.; Teixeira,E.A..
The effects of different water flow rates and feed training on the production of "pacamã" Lophiosilurus alexandri juveniles were evaluated. In the first experiment, nine day post-hatch larvae (n= 2,400) were stocked at a density of 5 larvae/L. Different water flow (F) rates were tested: F1 = 180; F2 = 600; F3 = 1,300; and F4 = 2,600mL/min. Artemia nauplii were offered as food during the first 15 days of active feeding. In the second experiment for feed training, 720 juveniles (total length of 22.2mm) were stocked at a density of 1.5 juveniles/L. A water flow rate similar to F1 was used. The use of extruded dry diet was tested, and feed training was done with and without other enhanced flavors (Artemia nauplii or Scott emulsion). The water flow rates did...

This study evaluated the effects of larval densities, cultured in flow-through system, in the yield and quantity of larvae. The first experiment compared the larval yield of a flowthrough system (80 larvae mL-1) and a batch system (8 larvae mL-1), which resulted in a higher yield and number of larvae in the flowthrough system, after 23 days. The second experiment compared two larval densities (20 and 45 larvae mL-1) in flowthrough system. The densities affected the yield after 15 and 23 days and the larvae final quantity after all tested times (8, 15, and 23 days). After 23 days of larviculture, the yield was highest for 20 larvae mL-1 and the larval number for 45 larvae mL-1. The third experiment also compared two larval densities (100 and 150 larvae...

Growth and survival of dorado Salminus brasiliensis (Pisces, Characidae) post-larvae cultivated with different types of food and photoperiods BABT
Schütz,Jackson Haroldo; Nuñer,Alex Pires de Oliveira.
The effect of food and photoperiod on dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) post-larvae growth and survival was investigated using the following treatments: LD (Light: Dark) 24:0 + Artemia nauplii (A), LD 24:0 + fish prey (F), LD 14:10 + A, LD 14:10 + F, LD 0:24 +A and LD 0:24 + F. Prochilodus lineatus larvae were used as fish prey. Higher survival rates were registered in fish prey treatments (P<0.05) and were not influenced by photoperiod whereas in Artemia treatments, the survival was very low, but directly proportional to light increase (P<0.05). The better growth in LD 0:24 was related to a safe-energy strategy that reduced energy consumption whereas in LD 24:0, the higher energy consumption reduced the growth. In intermediate photoperiod, the...

Morphometric comparison between hatchery-reared and wild-caught megalopae of the mangrove crab PAB
Ayres,Bárbara Andressa Casagrande; Silva,Ubiratã Assis Teixeira da; Souza,Robson Ventura de; Boeger,Walter Antonio; Ostrensky,Antonio.
The objective of this work was to compare the morphometry of hatchery-reared and wild-caught mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) megalopae. Ten U. cordatus megalopae of each group (hatchery-reared and wild-caught) were individually analyzed using a stereoscopic microscope equipped with an ocular micrometer. Length, width, and height of all megalopae were measured, and the size of body appendices was determined. The results indicate that the hatchery-reared megalopae are more robust than the wild ones. Furthermore, some significant differences in the size of certain appendices can be cues of the kind of alterations that hatchery-reared individuals experience.
